OPERA RARA and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment recreate Offenbach’s dazzling romantic opera Fantasio
Fantasio, considered one of Offenbach’s most beautiful and refined works is a heady cocktail of charm, gracefulness and gentle melancholy, of bad-tempered jokes and poetry, marking Offenbach’s crucial step on his way towards The Tales of Hoffmann.
It is among the least known of Offenbach’s lyric works, having been almost totally ignored since its very brief run in Paris in 1872. Opera Rara intends to put this right with its studio recording and concert performance using a brand new performing edition of the complete work by music publishers Boosey & Hawkes (edition Keck)
Opera Rara has assembled a marvellous cast, including Sarah Connolly (Fantasio), Brenda Rae (Elsbeth), Victoria Simmonds (Flamel) Russell Braun (Le Prince), Neal Davies (Sparck) and Brindley Sherratt (Le Roi). With the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, conducted by Sir Mark Elder.
OPERA RARA makes no profit at all and relies entirely on fundraising to research and record these rare works. In December 2013, Opera Rara made the world premiere studio recording of the complete opera, immediately followed by a concert performance with the same cast at London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 15 December 2013.
