ORCHESTRA
The Philharmonia Orchestra
From its beginnings as a recording orchestra in 1945, the Philharmonia has worked under some of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, including Furtwangler, Toscanini, Karajan, and Otto Klemperer. Under its principal conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi, the Philharmonia is publicly committed to performing and commissioning new music from leading composers; its series ’Clocks and Clouds: The Music of Gyšergy Ligeti’ was given the 1997 Best Concert Series Award by the Royal Philharmonic Society. Equally, the Philharmonia has displayed a commitment to overlooked gems of the past by its involvement on upwards of 20 Opera Rara recordings, most of them under the baton of David Parry.
