ABOUT US
|
Opera Rara, the brainchild of Patric Schmid and Don White has been in the business of bringing back forgotten operatic repertoire of the nineteenth century for the last thirty-five years. Operas once threatened with extinction have now been brought vividly back to life through the Opera Rara recordings.

Opera Rara Releases – 2008
February: Donizetti – Imelda de’ Lambertazzi. In a new departure for Opera Rara, we joined forces with Mark Elder and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment to record Donizetti’s thrilling opera. Nicole Cabell as Imelda leads the cast with Frank Lopardo (Orlando), Massimo Giordano (Lamberto), James Westman (Bonifacio), Brindley Sherratt (Ubaldo) and the Geoffrey Mitchell Choir.
May: Ambroise Thomas – La Cour de Célimène. Thomas composed this opéra comique in 1855. Set in 1750 in a chateau near the French capital, the plot centers on a young widowed Countess who has no fewer than 14 suitors. Laura Claycomb is the Countess with Joan Rodgers (La Baronne), Sébastien Droy (Le Chevalier) and Alastair Miles (Le Commandeur) with members of the Geoffrey Mitchell Choir. Andrew Litton conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra.
May: Mayr Rediscovered. Between 1794 and 1824 Mayr composed over 60 operas. Admired for him combination of Italianate melody with Germanic harmony and instrumentation, he is a composer whose music explores the psychology of his characters with deeply satisfying thoughtfulness – as this absorbing selection of exceptions, taken from the Opera Rara catalogue, demonstrates.
September: Bellini – La straniera. First staged at La Scala in 1829 the score points forward to Bellini’s greatest works and on its own account includes superb dramatic writing. Patrizia Ciofi is Alaida (The stranger) with Mark Stone (Il barone di Valdeburgo), Darío Schmunck (Arturo), Enkelejda Shokas (Isoletta), Graeme Broadbent (Il Priore), Roland Wood (Il signore di Montolino) and Aled Hall (Osburgo) with the Geoffrey Mitchell Choir and The London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by David Parry.
November: Jean-Baptiste Wekerlin – La Laitière de Trianon (The Milkmaid of Trainon). Volume 12 in Opera Rara’s Il Salotto series is a single work designed for intimate performance. Just two singers, Joan Rodgers and Yann Beuron with Jeff Cohen (piano), take part in this piece, set at Versailles in 1775.
